Produced by passing steel through a molten bath of terne metal (lead and tin alloy) in a continuous coating operation. The coating enhances the sheet for a variety of applications. The coating provides good corrosion resistance for fuel tank applications, is very ductile and acts as a lubricant for parts that involve deep drawing, and it provides a surface that is readily solderable for electronic–component chassis applications. The terne coating (without the passivation treatment) is also paintable without any special surface preparation.
